What is a Brut Nature champagne ?

Brut Nature champagne is the driest style of champagne, without any sugar added after the second fermentation in the bottle (zero dosage). It offers a pure, crisp expression of the wine, allowing the natural character of the grapes and terroir to shine through without any sweetness to mask imperfections. This style is especially popular among growers and natural wine enthusiasts seeking authenticity and precision, often resulting in a more mineral-driven, zesty, and linear profile.

What is the Traditional Method ?

Champagne is made using the Traditional Method (Méthode Champenoise), where a second fermentation takes place inside each bottle, creating its fine bubbles and deep flavors. The wine is then aged for a couple of years. This process takes time and care, but results in Champagne’s signature elegance. By contrast, wines like Prosecco use a faster method where the second fermentation happens in large steel tanks, producing lighter, fruitier bubbles at a lower cost.

Is zero dosage champagne the same as Brut Nature?

Almost. Zero dosage is the legal category (0-3 g/L residual sugar). Brut Nature is a label term that usually means the same thing. Check individual bottles.

Can I age zero dosage champagne?

Yes, beautifully. Many zero dosage champagnes develop more complexity over 5-10 years. Store them on their side in a cool, dark place.

Why does zero dosage taste dry if some have 3 grams of sugar?

3 grams of sugar in a 750ml bottle is imperceptible to most palates. It is technically dry.

Can I serve zero dosage champagne as an aperitif?

Yes, but pair it with something to eat: nuts, cheese, olives. It is not a wine for sipping without food.
