Four Generations in the Marne Valley
The Laval family has been working the land around Boursault since the 1870s, when Jules inherited 40 acres of vineyard. Back then, grapes were sold to the big houses, as most small farmers did. It took nearly a century before the family started bottling their own champagne, but when they did, the result was well worth the wait. Roger and Fabienne launched production in 1948, and in 1979, Michel created the brand as we know it today: Champagne Michel Laval.
This is a classic Récoltant Manipulant operation, meaning every grape that goes into the bottle was grown, harvested, and pressed on the family's own vines in the Marne Valley. That kind of traceability is rare and valuable in a region where many labels hide the origin of their fruit.
The valley's warm microclimate and its mix of chalk and clay soils give these wines a generous, approachable character that feels welcoming from the first sip. Michel modernised the estate's viticulture and cellar practices while preserving the family's hands-on approach, and that thoughtful balance between tradition and progress defines the house today. For anyone who believes in grower champagne as a philosophy, not just a category, Michel Laval is a quiet but convincing ambassador.
Honest Champagne from Estate-Grown Fruit
There is no pretence with Michel Laval. The range is focused and unpretentious: a Traditional Brut that delivers reliable pleasure and an Extra Brut for those who prefer their champagne a little drier and more direct. Both are made entirely from estate fruit, using the traditional grape varieties of the Marne Valley.
Pinot Meunier thrives here, bringing its characteristic roundness, orchard fruit, and fruit-forward charm, while Pinot Noir adds backbone and structure and Chardonnay brings a lift of freshness and acidity. The winemaking is straightforward but careful, aiming to capture the vineyard's personality rather than impose a heavy cellar hand. What we appreciate about these wines is their transparency: you taste the valley, the soil, the warmth, and the season without distraction or artifice. They are champagnes that pair beautifully with everyday moments, from a weeknight dinner to a lazy Sunday afternoon with friends and family.
The pricing reflects the family's belief that great champagne does not need to be expensive, just well made and honestly produced. That ethos resonates deeply with how we think about champagne at The Champagne Fox, where accessibility is always a virtue.
A Family Legacy We Are Proud to Share
Choosing Michel Laval for our collection was an easy decision. The 150-year family history, the genuine estate-grown commitment, and the honest, food-friendly style all align perfectly with what we look for in a producer.
These are wines that do not shout for attention; they earn it quietly, glass after glass, meal after meal. The Marne Valley is sometimes overshadowed by flashier appellations like the Côte des Blancs or the Montagne de Reims, but producers like Michel Laval remind us why this warm, rolling landscape deserves its place in any serious champagne conversation.
If you are looking for a great champagne under €50, Michel Laval should be on your list. The wines overdeliver for their price, offering genuine character and craftsmanship without the Grand Cru markup. We think of Michel Laval as champagne for people who care more about what is in the glass than what is on the label, and we mean that as the highest compliment we can pay. Open a bottle and you will understand exactly what we mean. This is champagne made by people who measure success in generations, not quarterly reports, and that patience shows in every glass.
